Madjid Bougherra ( Arabic مجيد بوقرة, DMG Maǧīd Būqara ; * October 7, 1982 in Longvic , France ) is a former Algerian-French soccer player and current coach .

Career

Club career

Bougherra moved in 1994 from AS Fontaine d'Ouche to the youth department of AS Longvic. He played there for eight years before moving to FC Gueugnon in 2002 . At the end of January 2006 he was awarded to the English second division club Crewe Alexandra . After convincing games, Crewe Alexandra wanted to tie him to the club in the long term, but Bougherra decided to leave the club after relegation to the third division .

Although Bougherra had a number of offers from first division clubs, he decided to move to the second-rate club Sheffield Wednesday . He was named Player of the Month for his second month and captained his team against the Queens Park Rangers in October 2006 .

In 2007, Bougherra was signed by Charlton Athletic from the Premier League . Bougherra was a regular in the following season and continued to attract attention. In 2008 he finally moved to the Scottish first division club Glasgow Rangers .

In 2009 and 2010 he was named Algeria's Footballer of the Year.

For the 2011/12 season he joined the Qatari club Lekhwiya SC . With the club, he was able to celebrate winning the league championship in his first season, as well as the 2013/14 season, and the national cup victory in 2013.

After his contract expired, he moved to the United Arab Emirates in the summer of 2014 , where he signed with Fujairah SC together with compatriot Hassan Yebda . He stayed here for two years and then went to Greece to join the second division Aris Thessaloniki . However, he did not play a game there and ended his active career in December 2016.

National team

Bougherra was born in France and grew up in Dijon ; he decided to play for the Algerian national team since his grandfather was Algerian. He made his debut on January 2, 2004 in the Olympic qualification for the Algerian U-23 against Ghana and completed two more games for the U-23. On June 20, 2004 Bougherra made his debut in the senior team of Algeria in the World Cup qualifier against Zambia . On July 2, 2007 he scored his first of three international goals in the Africa Cup qualifying game against Cape Verde (2-2). Bougherra also played for Algeria in the 2010 World Cup . Since the resignation of Anthar Yahia from the national team in spring 2012, he has been captain of the team. After Bougherra missed the 2015 African Championship due to an injury, he returned to the national team towards the end of World Cup qualification. Also at the soccer world championship 2014 he led the team as captain on the field, with which the first place in the last sixteen succeeded. Due to injury, however, he could not be used in the last group game against Russia .

In the fall of 2014, Bougherra announced his international career, ending in February after the 2015 Africa Cup . The fans said goodbye to him in the final home game of qualification for the tournament on November 15, 2014 against Ethiopia . As expected, national coach Christian Gourcuff called him on December 15, 2014 in the final squad for the Africa Cup.

In March 2015 he was awarded the highest Algerian Order of Merit, the “Médaille de l'Ordre du Mérite” in gold.

Coaching career

At the beginning of 2017 he was assistant coach of the Algerian national team for almost five weeks . Then he coached the reserve team of al-Duhail SC in Qatar for two years from the summer . Since 2019 he has been the coach of his former club Fujairah SC in the UAE Arabian Gulf League .

Private

Bougherra has been married since 2005. He has a daughter (* 2007).
