Magnus von Wedderkop (Lieutenant General)

Friedrich Wilhelm Magnus von Wedderkop (born April 24, 1882 in Oldenburg , † November 10, 1962 in Hamburg ) was an officer in the Wehrmacht with the rank of lieutenant general . As the son of Julius von Wedderkop, he came from the Lower Saxon noble family von Wedderkop .

Life

Like his father, Magnus von Wedderkop pursued the career of an officer. He started as a cadet in the Grand Duchy Mecklenburgisches Grenadier Regiment. 89 and on promotions to sergeant and lieutenant , he was adjutant of the III. Battalions. From 1909 to 1912 Wedderkop also worked at the Prussian War Academy .

With the outbreak of the First World War , Wedderkop was promoted to captain in the general staff and transferred to the staff of the chief of the general staff of the field army . In the course of the war he was a company commander in the infantry regiment "von Grolmann" (1. Posensches) No. 18 and on September 16, 1916 transferred to the general staff of the 35th Reserve Division .

After the Prussian Army was dissolved, Wedderkop was transferred to the Reichswehr Ministry on October 1, 1919 . He was promoted to major in 1923 through the post of company commander in the 17th Infantry Regiment and the transfer to the General Staff of Infantry Leader I. On February 1, 1926, he was commander of the 1st Battalion of the 4th (Prussian) Infantry Regiment and two years later was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

On November 1, 1930 he was appointed commandant of Küstrin . One month later, he was promoted to colonel and on September 30, 1932, was promoted to major general .

During the Second World War he worked as a substitute military inspector for the Wehrmacht in Hamburg and was appointed lieutenant general on November 1, 1939 .

According to the Hamburger Abendblatt of November 12, 1962, Magnus von Wedderkop was the last person to bear the name of Wedderkop. He was married to Ottilie Clara Marta von Block (1885–1982). His older sister Sophie Adamine Friederike Gustava Paula von Wedderkop (1879–1950) married the German officer and resistance fighter Alexander von Falkenhausen in 1904 .

Wedderkop was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .
