The Maldonkopf is a 2632  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Lechtal Alps in Tyrol . He is mainly known for the "Imster Klettersteig ".

It is located about six kilometers northwest of Imst in the Muttekopf Group . To the northwest, it falls in steep rock faces towards the Hahntennjoch . To the west are the rear ( 2554  m ), middle ( 2562  m ) and front ( 2599  m ) Scharnitzkopf . The Sparketgrat ridge (up to 2632  m ) adjoins it in the east, and the Hintere Platteinspitze ( 2723  m ) follows the Sparketschartl crossing in the southeast . To the south, the mountain emits a pronounced southern ridge, which carries a popular climbing mountain with the Engelkarturm ( 2467  m ) . The Maldonkopf itself was of no tourist importance for a long time, but since the Imst via ferrata was built it has become one of the most frequently climbed peaks in the region.

Traditional normal route

From the Muttekopfhütte or the Imst the ascent leads into the steep, debris-filled Engelkar. In this on the left (preferably along the rock walls) up. Leaving out the rubble gutters that flow in from the left, ascend into the upper northwest corner of the Kares. Into the gully that starts there and initially in difficulty level II (UIAA) ) further up. Overcoming a few small chimneys, one of which is difficult (III), up to a notch that separates the Maldonkopf from the Sparketkopf. From the notch on the right a tower immediately back onto the ridge and over the rugged ridge (II) with a few small bypasses to the summit.

Imst via ferrata

The Imst via ferrata is a demanding via ferrata that leads from Scharnitzkar in the south, mostly over the south ridge to the summit. It was inaugurated in 1989.

Walking times

  • Parking lot of the mountain railway in Hochimst (approx. 1000 m) to the Untermarkter Alm / middle station of the cable car: approx. 1 hour
  • further over the so-called Latschenalm to the Latschenhütte and further to the Muttekopfhütte (approx. 1934 m): approx. 1.5 hours
  • Muttekopfhütte to start the Imst via ferrata: approx. 1 hour
  • Entry to the summit (2632 m): approx. 3 hours (depending on condition / ability)
  • Summit to the car park in Hochimst: approx. 3 hours (descent via Engelkar, very vulnerable to falling rocks)

difficulty

The via ferrata has a level of difficulty D to E ( very to extremely difficult ), in some cases the walls are vertical, at risk of falling rocks and on the descent even at great risk of falling rocks.

Routes

The starting point is Imst at the parking lot of the mountain railway in Hochimst at an altitude of 1000 meters. Using the cable car saves hours of ascent and descent time. The way to the entrance is very well signposted.
The via ferrata itself is insured with steel cables throughout. Halfway through it can be shortened and an emergency exit to Engelkar can be used.

descent

The descent from the summit takes place in a south-easterly direction over the Engelkar, a steep scree field that is very difficult to walk on and usually not manageable without falling rocks.
The Alpine Coaster , a summer toboggan run, can also be used from the middle station of the cable car .
