Mamá, mamá, mamá is an Argentine feature film for children under the direction of Sol Berruezo Pichon-Rivière , which also dates back to the script. The debut film celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale in February 2020 and was shown there in the Generation Kplus section .

action

Five-year-old Erín drowns in the swimming pool at home. Her mother finds her there. She leaves another of her daughters, twelve-year-old Cleo, alone in the house for hours afterwards. Cleo's aunt Silvina soon arrives with her daughters, six-year-old Leoncia, eleven-year-old Manuela and fifteen-year-old Nerina. Each of the girls is then immersed in their own micro-universe. While Nerina is toying with the few men around her, Manuela looks at herself in the mirror because her mother put her on a diet. Cleo is disturbed by the death of her sister, but cannot express this: In her suffering, her mother has locked herself in her room, where her aunt takes care of her. That is why Cleo immerses herself in the female childhood world, for moments even, completely against nature, in her own death. She experiences the fear of never having kissed, the fear of having to be alone for life. She feels dread of menstruation, in which she sees children who were never allowed to be born. She perceives a body that no longer belongs to the person who lives in it and thus experiences the irreversible change of puberty.

The film illuminates the world of girls in puberty . The audience experiences the horror that is evoked by everything that happens to a girl when she inevitably becomes a woman: the feeling when the body changes and comes into view of the environment, the fears associated with the slimming mania and the Pressure of the prevailing beauty norms.

production

Sol Berruezo Pichon-Rivière developed the film script within three weeks in the summer of 2017 from a monologue by the eleven-year-old protagonist Manuela. She is also the director of the film. The camera was directed by Rebeca Rossato Siqueira, while Lorena Moriconi was responsible for the film editing.

The team behind the camera consists exclusively of women, Cismänner have no dialogues in the film, only a father and a friend appear. The 23-year-old director justified her decision to shoot the film exclusively with women by stating that this was an attempt to create a sense of community that only exists in women's groups. She was convinced that in this way she could create exactly the calm, harmonious atmosphere that reigned between her mother, herself and her three younger sisters and that served as a source of inspiration. The film is also about very sensitive, body-related areas of the life of young girls in transition to women, so that it creates a more trusting atmosphere for the actresses if only women work on the project.

During the shooting, the director also started her documentary film project Crónica de mujeres en movimiento (German: Chronicle of Women in Motion ), which examines the role of women in the film industry in dialogue with Mamá, mamá, mamá . It places the audience behind the camera of mamá, mamá , mamá to show us its dynamic. Later the circle expands and the film explores the work situation. The women, who rarely have a voice in the male-dominated film industry, have their say.
