Mandi Gobindgarh (or short Gobindgarh ; Panjabi ਮੰਡੀ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਗੜ੍ਹ ) is a city in the Indian state of Punjab .
Mandi Gobindgarh is located in the Fatehgarh Sahib district . The city lies between Ludhiana and Ambala on the national highway NH 1 . Mandi Gobindgarh owns a train station on the Ludhiana – Ambala line. 9 km east of Mandi Gobindgarh is the district capital Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib , 6 km west is the city of Khanna .
The city of Mandi Gobindgarh has the status of a Municipal Council and is divided into 19 wards . In the 2011 census, the population of Mandi Gobindgarh was 73,130 (including suburbs ( outgrowths ) 82,266). Ten years earlier the population was 55,403.
According to a tradition, the sixth Sikh guru Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib stayed for 40 days on the bank of a large lake ( Sarovar ) called Barhi Dhab . The place was later renamed Gobindgarh . Today there is a Gurdwara in the city.
Under Maharaja Hira Singh of Nabha , in whose territory Gobindgarh was located, the first industrial companies were established in 1902. In 1928 Gobindgarh was declared a free trade area. Then a steel industry developed. Mandi Gobindgarh is known today as the “steel city” of India. It is the location of several rolling mills .
