The Manesseplatz is located in the district of Wiedikon in Zurich in District 3 near the Sihl between the Uetliberg and Zurich in Switzerland .

Location and traffic

Five streets meet in the lively, busy square: Manessestrasse, Uetlibergstrasse and Steinstrasse. The Hopfenstrasse and the Malzstrasse also converge . The latter are reminiscent of the Üetliberg brewery , which was merged with the Hürlimann brewery at the beginning of the 1920s . The company under this name was operated near Manesseplatz; it then covered around 60% of beer consumption in Zurich. The place is therefore closely linked to Zurich's brewery history .

The Sihl flows into the city nearby , and the A3 motorway leaves the city in the direction of Lucerne and Chur . Manesseplatz and its surroundings have been given a new look since 2007 by the nearby Sihlcity shopping, wellness and leisure center .

At the Manesseplatz bus stop, two buses run by Zürcher Verkehrsbetriebe , namely bus 72 in the direction of Morgental and Tiefenbrunnen and bus 76 in the direction of Binz Center and Wiedikon train station .

Via the nearby Giesshübel train station , the S4 of the Sihltal-Zürich-Uetliberg-Bahn (SZU) can quickly reach Zurich main station , the Uetliberg and the rural Langnau-Gattikon.

Sonnenzeit house with Sihl and vineyards - drawing by Capitain Esslinger (1800)

Today's Manesseplatz has developed over the centuries on the area near the formerly free course of the Sihl . The former meadow became cultivated land, and meadows and fields with scattered trees and vineyards were created . A drawing from the year 1800 has come down to us that shows the "Sonnenzeit House" as the only larger building.

Like many other suburbs, the village of Wiedikon was incorporated into the city of Zurich in 1893. The solar time was not to remain the only house on the square outside of the former village center: brickworks , truck stops, the Uetliberg brewery and, in the 1960s, a shooting range against the vineyards followed.

Surname

The crossing was named in 1935 in honor of the knight and councilor Rüdiger II of Manesse (1252-1304). He came from a Zurich patrician family , which flourished in the 13th and 14th centuries. Together with his son Johannes von Manesse, he had promoted poetry and songs a. a. earned through the publication of the Codex Manesse , also called Manessische Liederhandschrift .

character

As a junction of several streets, the square can be reached and left on all sides on foot or by public and private transport. A wide variety of restaurants , shops , a pharmacy and large offices can be found here in the smallest of spaces .

Because of the proximity of the synagogues and because the quarter has been a home for the Jewish part of the population for ages, the square is a popular meeting place and starting point when celebrating Jewish festivals .

Because of all access roads right of way applies, of course road users as a demanding, dangerous intersection is known.
