Manfred Richard Hermann Barthel (born February 24, 1924 in Chemnitz ; † October 18, 2007 in Munich ) was a German writer , screenwriter , journalist , critic , film producer and film director .

Life

Barthel studied theater studies in Berlin and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. In later years he published books and wrote film manuscripts, often under the signature of Dr. Manfred Barthel. He took his first professional steps as an editor and critic for the newspaper Der Abend . In 1953 he was hired by Kurt Ulrichs Berolina as a dramaturge . At the end of the 1950s, Barthel also took part in the scripts for two film comedies.

Barthel was involved in the creation of the Berlinale and from 1963 to 1976 successor to Gerhard F. Hummel at Constantin Film . There, beginning with room 13 , he was mainly occupied with the dramaturgical supervision of the Edgar Wallace films . He also oversees a number of Karl May films . At the same time, Barthel is said to have continued to write screenplays, this time under the pseudonym Michael Haller. Since Barthel's participation in the production of the comedy Oh Jonathan - oh Jonathan! with Heinz Rühmann and the script collaboration for the Rühmann depreciation film The Chinese Miracle , Barthel was considered a close confidante of the film star. In 1987 he gave the souvenir ribbon to Heinz Rühmann on the artist's 85th birthday .
