Manfred Classen (born December 30, 1943 ) is a former German soccer player . The defender played three league games at 1. FC Cologne in the 1970/71 Bundesliga .

career

Manfred Classen played for his hometown club Viktoria Alsdorf from youth up to the age of 25 . It was not until the 1969/70 season that he joined SC Jülich in 1910 in the Mittelrhein Association League . Under coach Martin Luppen , Jülich won the championship with 49: 7 points and again took part in the competition for the German amateur championship . The offensive full-back and student of dentistry scored a goal in the final on July 11, 1970 in Siegen against the amateurs of Eintracht Braunschweig to win 3-0. His round performance impressed FC coach Hans Merkle , so that FC signed the 26-year-old as a licensed player for the 1970/71 season. At the start of the lap, Merkle was no longer in office, Ernst Ocffekt now held that position. In addition to Classen, the other players Thomas Parits , Wolfgang John , Hans-Josef Kapellmann , Kurt Kowalski and Hans-Jürgen Lex were also newly signed.

The defender from SC Jülich made his debut on January 23, 1971 in a 1-1 home draw against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga. He came on in the 26th minute for Werner Biskup . His second Bundesliga assignment took place on May 1, 1971. In the 0-1 defeat at Arminia Bielefeld, he was substituted on for Wolfgang Weber in the second half . On the penultimate round match day, May 29, 1971, he played the entire 90 minutes in a 2-2 away game against FC Schalke 04. In front of goalkeeper Manfred Manglitz he formed the FC defensive together with Kowalski, Bernd Cullmann and Matthias Hemmersbach . Classen had already played his first competitive game for the billy goat Elf on September 29, 1970 in the Messestadt Cup in a 1-0 away defeat at Racing Paris Sedan. His second game in this competition he completed on December 9, 1970 in a 3-0 home win against Spartak Trnava. Three days later, on December 12th, he was also used in the first main round of the DFB Cup with a 5-2 away win at SSV Reutlingen.

Next to him were prominent names such as Wolfgang Overath , Heinz Flohe , Wolfgang Weber , Karl-Heinz Thielen and Hannes Löhr in the Cologne squad. Not only because of the level of competition, but also because of his studies in dentistry, he was unable to assert himself at 1. FC Köln and therefore joined Viktoria Köln in the second-class regional football league West for the 1971/72 season . Under coach Hans Neuschäfer , he completed seven regional league games alongside teammates like Karl-Heinz Mödrath , Hans-Jürgen Lex, Friedhelm Otters and Gerd Pittscheidt and then returned to his home club in Alsdorf. There he ran a dental practice for almost 35 years, which he handed over to his son in 2008 and later moved to Simmerath in the Eifel region.
