Manfred Hermann Schmid

Manfred Hermann Schmid (born August 10, 1947 in Ottobeuren ) is a German musicologist and Mozart expert .

Life

Born into a musical family (his father Ernst Fritz Schmid was a full professor of musicology at the University of Tübingen ), Schmid first decided to study the violin at the Leopold Mozart Conservatory in Augsburg with Rudolf Koeckert after graduating from high school , before studying musicology , Philosophy and art history at the Universities of Salzburg , Freiburg and Munich . He studied musicology with Gerhard Croll , Hans Heinrich Eggebrecht and Thrasybulos Georgiades , whose last doctoral student was Schmid. In 1975, Schmid with a record of " Mozart and the Salzburg tradition" to Dr. phil. PhD.

His habilitation took place in 1980 on the subject of "Music as an image. Studies on the work of Weber , Schumann and Wagner ". Schmid took on various teaching positions at the universities of Munich and Bayreuth , the music academies in Munich and Augsburg, and worked as director of the Munich Museum of Musical Instruments . In 1986, Schmid was appointed full professor of musicology at the University of Tübingen as the successor to Georg von Dadelsen . In 1992/93 he was visiting professor at the University of Salzburg. On his 60th birthday in 2007, a symposium with the title "Mozart in the Center" took place in Tübingen. Schmid has been retired since October 2012. However, he regularly teaches at the universities of Munich and Vienna. Since 2010 he has been chairman of the Academy for Mozart Research at the Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg.

Schmid is an internationally recognized Mozart expert , but his works are devoted to the entire European musical tradition from ancient times to the present . However, there is a clear focus on the music of the Viennese classics , German Romanticism and the music of the Renaissance . Other areas of interest Schmid, in addition to the general history of music especially the Organology , the notation customer and ethnomusicology .

Schmid is the editor of Mozart Studies (ISSN 0942-5217, until 2013, 22nd volume with Schneider, Tutzing, since 2015 with Hollitzer Verlag , Vienna) and the Tübingen Contributions to Musicology .
