Life

Manfred Strecker began studying geography and biology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen after graduating from high school in 1974 and two years in the military in 1976 . After completing his intermediate diploma, he began studying geology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as part of an exchange scholarship , which he completed in 1984 with an analysis of the zoning of earthquake-prone areas in the island arc chain of Vanuatu in the SW Pacific at Cornell University in Ithaca ( New York) ) graduated with a Master of Science. After two years as a research assistant at Cornell University, he graduated in 1986 with a doctorate on tectonics of the Andes . In 1987 he moved to the Geological Institute of the University of Karlsruhe , where he completed his habilitation in 1991 . After a two-year stay as a Heisenberg scholar and visiting professor at Stanford University from 1993 to 1995, he was appointed C4 professor for general geology at the University of Potsdam . Strecker has been a member of the Science Council (Germany) since 2016 . The Science Council advises the federal and state governments on all questions relating to research and university development.

Services

Strecker examines the mutual influence of tectonics and climate as well as erosion and sedimentation processes . An example of this interaction is the influence of climatic extremes such as El Niño or periods of heavy rain with earthquakes in tectonically active areas that lead to large landslides and mudslides. His work here led to the identification of risk areas. In 2004 he was awarded the Leibniz Prize for his pioneering work in this field .
