action

Porter Wren is a journalist from New York and married to Lisa Wren. Most recently, through his work, he found a missing girl who even the police couldn't get anywhere. Still, his job isn't safe because the media mogul Hobbs has taken over his newspaper. One day Carolin Crowley shows up in his office and asks him to solve the unexplained death of her husband Simon. His body was found under the rubble of a demolished house. An accident seems unlikely, but the external circumstances do not allow any trace analysis. Wren begins to research and becomes more and more immersed in Carolin's life. In addition, he succumbs to her charm, regardless of the fact that his wife is waiting at home with their children. She invites him to her apartment, where she shows him the police files on the case. Porter goes through Simon's belongings and forms an image of him as an eccentric and controlling man who filmed his own life almost obsessively with a camera. Sometimes also hidden cameras. There are thousands of memory cards with such recordings but none of them give any indication of his death.

Hobbs learns of Porter's affair with Crowley and forces him to investigate further on his behalf under threats against his family. Hobbs searches for a specific memory card that Crowley is presumably using to blackmail him. When Porter asks Carolin about it, she tells me to look for this memory card too. After he won a drinking game, Simon forced her to have sex with a stranger and recorded it with a hidden camera. She met Hobbs by chance and decided to sleep with him. When Simon saw the video it made him angry and he hid the memory card. After his death, Hobbs began threatening Carolin. Porter, who forces her to admit that she only seduced him to get his help, is beaten up outside his house by thugs on behalf of Hobbs, threatening that it will get worse until he finds the video. Port visits Simon's father in a nursing home. He is not approachable but Porter finds a video camera in his dessert. But it only contains recordings of Simon's visits to his father. Meanwhile, Hobbs' thugs break into Porter's house. In doing so, they accidentally injure Porter's son. As a result, Porter's wife Lisa desperately takes the children and leaves Porter. In revenge, Porter attacks Hobbs' lawyer. He watches the video from the nursing home again and notices that Simon's father receives regular visits from a woman named Mrs. Sagal. Porter breaks into Mrs. Sagal's house and finds another memory card, but is caught. After declaring himself, he learns that she is a friend of Simon's family, who became Simon's surrogate mother after his own mother died as a child. To thank her for this, Simon transferred money to her every month. Mrs. Sagal felt obliged to take care of Simon's father. Porter realizes that the memory card that Simon unconsciously sent copies to Hobbs is the one everyone is looking for. You can see that Carolin and Hobbs had a long conversation before sleeping together.

Porter gives the video to Hobbs, ending the threats. In good faith, Hobbs gives him a key that his men found in Caroline's apartment. Porter finds out that the key belongs to the basement where Simon was found. There he finds another hidden camera. On the memory card, Porter sees that Simon brought Carolin into the building the night he died. After watching the sex tape, he demands that Caroline learn a dark secret about her stepfather that she revealed to Hobbs. Simon's forcible questioning of Caroline leads to his death.

The next morning, Porter meets Caroline and reveals the recording. He gives her a copy with the original as insurance against contacting his family. She in turn reveals the secret that she told Hobbs but saved from Simon. Porter says goodbye and wishes her all the best.

Porter expresses his guilt for everything that happened, including his divorce. He admits that the experience corrupted him and reveals that there has always been an inner darkness. In the last scene, Porter drives past the house of the now remarried Caroline and they look at each other one last time.
