Manley Lanier "Sonny" Carter, Jr. (born August 15, 1947 in Macon , Georgia , USA ; † April 5, 1991 in Brunswick , Georgia, USA) was an American astronaut . He was killed when an Atlantic Southeast Airlines plane crashed while approaching Brunswick, Georgia. It was a business flight for NASA. After his death, the Sonny Carter Training Facility was named after him, an underwater training facility for astronauts that he helped develop.

education

Carter received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Emory University in Georgia in 1969 and his doctorate in medicine in 1973 . From 1970 to 1973 he was a professional footballer for the Atlanta Chiefs in the NASL .

Carter completed his medical internship at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta . In July 1974 he went to the US Navy and attended the Aviation Medical School at Naval Air Station Pensacola . After serving as a flight surgeon, he was in April 1978 in Beeville ( Texas trained) for naval aviation. In September 1982 he was allowed to attend the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN). In June 1984, he graduated from the Naval Test Pilot School as a test pilot .

Astronaut activity

In May 1984 he was selected by NASA as an astronaut aspirant. After his training as a mission specialist, he was deployed in the astronaut's office for the field of spacecraft . At the time of his death, he was nominated as a mission specialist for the STS-42 mission .

STS-61-I

STS-61-I was a Challenger mission that was canceled after the Challenger disaster. This shuttle mission was scheduled for September 27, 1986. The crew were Donald Williams , Michael Smith (died in the Challenger disaster), James Bagian , Bonnie Jeanne Dunbar , Manley Lanier Carter, as well as the payload specialist Nagapathi Bhat (India) and a US journalist.

STS-33

Carter took off on November 22, 1989 on the space shuttle Discovery for its first flight into space . A Defense Ministry satellite was suspended during the flight . After 79 orbits , the Discovery returned to Edwards Air Force Base on November 27th .

Private

Manley Carter left behind his wife Dana and two daughters.
