Manuel Basulto Jiménez (born May 17, 1869 in Adanero , Ávila province ; † August 12, 1936 in El Pozo del Tío Raimundo , Entrevías , Puente de Vallecas , Madrid ) was a Spanish clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Jaén . He was murdered during the persecution of the Church by the Second Spanish Republic . In the Roman Catholic Church he is venerated as a martyr and blessed .

Life

Manuel Basulto Jiménez received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Jaén on March 15, 1893 .

Pope Pius X appointed him Bishop of Lugo on September 4, 1909 . The Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, Archbishop Antonio Vico , donated him episcopal ordination on January 16 of the following year ; Co- consecrators were military bishop Jaime Cardona y Tur and the bishop of Madrid , José Maria Salvador y Barrera .

At the beginning of August 1936, Manuel Basulto Jiménez was arrested by supporters of the republic and on August 11th was transported from Jaén on one of the so-called death trains. The train was stopped south of Madrid city center and Manuel Basulto Jiménez, his sister and almost 200 other prisoners were murdered by left-wing militia officers.

The diocese of Jaén opened the diocesan information process in 1994, which was completed four years later. In 1999, the case files were handed over to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints for further proceedings . On March 27, 2013, Pope Francis confirmed the martyrdom of Manuel Basulto Jiménez and five other victims of church persecution. The beatification was performed by the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation, Angelo Amato , on October 13, 2013 in Tarragona .
