The Maran Centaurus was a Greek oil tanker .

history

The ship was built under the hull number 5082 at Daewoo Heavy Industries. The keel was laid on March 30th, the launch on July 9th, 1994. The ship was completed on August 31, 1995. The double-hulled ship was initially launched as Mindoro under the Liberian flag . From 2000 the ship was in service as Astro Centaurus, in 2009 it was renamed Maran Centaurus .

In 2017, the ship was sold for demolition to Wirana Shipping Corporation for $ 16.48 million . On October 6, 2017, the ship, renamed Ekta and brought under the flag of Palau , was stranded in Chittagong .

2009 pirate attack

On November 29, 2009, the ship was attacked and hijacked by Somali pirates around 600  nautical miles northeast of the Seychelles . At the time, 28 crew members , nine Greeks, two Ukrainians, one Romanian and 16 Filipinos were on board the ship, which was on its way from Kuwait to the USA with around two million barrels of crude oil . The charge is said to have been worth around $ 150 million.

The Greek frigate Adrias , which is participating in the EU Atalanta mission, tried unsuccessfully after the hijacking to locate the ship and to cut off its route to Somalia .

The ship and crew were released on January 18, 2010 against payment of a ransom. The ransom, which was dropped from a plane over the ship on January 17, is said to have been between 5 and 5.5 and 7 million US dollars, the highest ransom until then, the Somali ransom Blackmailed pirates.

Technical data and equipment

The ship was on a seven-cylinder - diesel engine of the manufacturer MAN Diesel & Turbo driven type 7S80MC Mk4. The engine worked on a propeller . Three MAN diesel generators of type 5L28 / 32H and a MAN emergency generator of type D 2866 LE were available for power supply.

The ship had 15 cargo tanks with a total capacity of 331,767 m³. The tanks could be loaded and unloaded via three manifolds . There were three pumps with a total capacity of 15,000 t / h. to disposal.
