Life
Marco Brociner grew up as the son of the businessman Idel Brociner and Pauline Goldenthal in a Jewish family. His brother Joseph B. Brociner (1846-1918) became a lawyer and fighter for the emancipation of Jews in Romania, Mauriciu Brociner (1855-1946) became an officer in the Romanian army and Andre Brociner (1856-1930) became a businessman.
Marco Brociner attended school in Jassy and studied philology or law at the universities of Leipzig and Munich and received his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1878 (not verifiable). As a student he published in the Romanian Jewish magazine "Vocea aparatorului". From 1879 he worked for the “Bucharester Tageblatt”, which he later took over as head. He returned to Romania in 1880. From 1882 he no longer wrote in Romanian, but only in German. In Romania he and others were persecuted politically in 1885, and he went to Vienna in 1887 , where Ludwig Ganghofer brought him to the Neue Wiener Tagblatt as a newspaper editor . Brociner married and had a daughter Lotti Brociner and a son Hans Brociner. With Ganghofer he wrote the play "The Wedding of Valeni" in 1890, which had 150 performances at the Deutsches Volkstheater and was filmed before the First World War. It also served as the libretto for Karel Weis ' opera The Rich Wedding . He wrote numerous dramas, short stories and novels. Brociner's dramatic works have been performed at the Hofburgtheater and the Akademietheater , among others . The modern theater in Vienna opened in 1924 under the director Robert Blum with Brociner's play “The woman is bitter”.
During the time of National Socialism , his play “The People Stand Up!” (1911) was placed on the “ List of harmful and undesirable literature ”. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, Brociner was mistreated as a Jew.
