Marcus Groß (born September 28, 1989 in Görlitz , GDR ) is a German canoeist . He is an Olympic champion in two and four kayaks and has been world champion twice.

Career

Big is with the federal police in the federal performance center Kienbaum and lives in Berlin. He competes in canoe racing for the GK90 Berlin-Grünau and won the bronze medal in the two-man kayak over 500 m at the 2009 World Championships together with Hendrik Bertz . In 2010, Groß became European champion over 1000 m as a batsman in a four-person kayak with Hendrik Bertz, Norman Bröckl and Tim Wieskötter .

In 2012, the four-man kayak with tall as a batsman came fourth at the Olympic Games in London . The final breakthrough for Groß followed in 2013. After qualifying for the national team at the national qualification in Duisburg , he started with Max Rendschmidt from Essen in a two-man kayak over 500 m and 1000 m. At the European Championships in Montemor-o-Velho , the K2 Rendschmidt / Groß won gold twice. At the world championships in Duisburg, Groß won the gold medal together with Rendschmidt over 1000 m and came fourth over 500 m. At the European Championships in Brandenburg in 2014 , K2 won gold over 1000 m with Rendschmidt and Groß. At the World Championships in Moscow, the same K2 won 4th place over 1000 m and 500 m. At the 2015 European Championships in Racice, the K2 won gold over 500 m and was European champion over 1000 m for the third time in a row. At the first European Games in Baku, Rendschmidt and Groß won the silver medal in K2 over 1000 m. At the World Championships in 2015 the two gold won well at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. In addition, on the last day of competition of the Olympic Games, Groß won gold in the German four-man kayak together with Max Rendschmidt, Max Hoff and Tom Liebscher over the 1000 meter distance. In the same year, Groß became European champions together with Max Hoff for the seventh time in his career at the European Championships in Moscow in the K2 over 1000 m.

For winning the Olympic gold medals, Marcus Groß was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by Federal President Joachim Gauck on November 1, 2016 . On December 10, 2016, he was honored as Berlin Sportsman of the Year .
