Margaretha Theodora Agnes von Velen (born November 9, 1668 - † August 15, 1750 in Nottuln ) was the abbess of Nottuln Abbey .

Life

Origin and family

Margaretha Theodora Agnes von Velen grew up with her nine siblings in the Westphalian noble family von Velen . Her parents were Hermann Matthias von Velen (Drost zu Papenburg) and Margaretha Agnes von Galen zu Assen . All siblings, including Christoph Alexander and Anton Heinrich Hermann , have entered the clergy. Her grandfather was Dietrich von Velen (founder of Papenburg). Dietrich Anton von Velen (Dompropst) was her uncle and the dean Friedrich Matthias von Korff called Schmising zu Tatenhausen her brother-in-law.

Career and work

Margaretha was sworn up on September 24, 1680 and unanimously elected dean on August 3, 1712. The election as abbess was on June 15, 1728. She was the successor to Helena Elisabeth von Wrede . Confirmation by the prince-bishop followed on July 10, 1728. Margaretha Theodora took the oath of faith on July 17 in the Nottulner church. Her successor was Anna Maria Theresia von der Recke zu Steinfurt .

Others

The village of Nottuln was almost completely destroyed by fire on May 3, 1748. The pen was also badly damaged. In the last years of her life she lived in seclusion, together with her twelve cats, in her newly built house. She fell victim to violent robbery, as a result of which she died. On August 19, 1750, her coffin was carried into the church in a solemn ceremony and buried under the high altar after mass.
