description

It is a dignified three-wing building , built from the sandstone typical of the region, with hipped roofs and a single-storey porter's house. In its current form, it comes from the reform architecture of the early 20th century. However, the core is much older. The area is delimited by an old enclosure wall and is not open to the public.

history

At the instigation of Bishop Arnoldi , the Order of the Ursulines in Trier founded a branch of their branch on Calvarienberg ( Ahrweiler ) near Trier Cathedral . A school for secondary daughters was established there. As a result of the Kulturkampf , the sisters left Trier. After returning and reopening, the old location was soon too small. The construction of the Magaretenhof began in 1893. The monastery, boarding school and girls' school, where students could take their Abitur from 1908 , were all housed in the house.

The so-called Villa Neuerburg - the only one of its kind on the Heiligkreuzer slope - used to be there. Remnants of this building formed the core of the new building. The adjacent area was initially used as a vineyard , and later, after the establishment of a brewery in the immediate vicinity, also as a hop garden. A nearby local road called Hopfengarten still reminds of this time .

The building was badly damaged in World War II , so that the school location had to be relocated to St. Maximin. In the immediate vicinity of the Magaretenhof, which now served as a boarding school after the war damage had been repaired , a new monastery and school building was erected and ready for occupancy in 1955. In the 1980s the high school was outsourced. Only the secondary school remained at the Bernhardstrasse site. The boarding school was also closed and in 1992 the buildings that were no longer in use were demolished. The residence of the remaining sisters was moved back to the Magaretenhof, which is still used as a monastery today.
