The Catholic parish and pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Flochberg , a district of Bopfingen in the Ostalbkreis in Baden-Württemberg , was built in the mid-18th century in the late Baroque style. Most of the furnishings, such as the painting and stucco, date from the 19th and 20th centuries. The church is dedicated to the Visitation of Mary .

history

The story of the pilgrimage to the Mother of God on the Roggenacker goes back to 1582 and the miraculous healing of the ten-year-old boy Wilhelm Wintzerer. Tradition has it that he was relieved of his epilepsy by an apparition of Mary in a rye field . The father of the child in question had an oak column erected in this field, to which he had attached a picture of the apparition of Mary painted on sheet metal. In the same year there were already several processions to the rye field.

In 1613 a small chapel was built around the oak column , which was consecrated to the Most Holy Mother of God and John the Baptist . In 1738, the patron saint , Count Johann Friedrich von Öttingen-Wallerstein , granted permission to build a church. The foundation stone was laid in 1741 and the first mass could be read in the church in 1745. In 1746 the vault, which collapsed in the same year, had to be rebuilt. It was not until 1765 that the church was consecrated by the Augsburg auxiliary bishop Franz Xaver Adelmann von Adelmannsfelden . Flochberg belonged to the Diocese of Augsburg until 1821, before it was incorporated into the newly created Diocese of Rottenburg .

architecture

The current bell tower with a height of 40 meters only received its baroque-inspired dome during the church renovation in 1971. At that time, the tower built in 1872 was renewed and its pointed roof was removed.

The interior is designed in the shape of a Greek cross . The chancel was laid out based on the model of the Austrian pilgrimage church Mariazell .

Furnishing

Resurrection Christ
archangel Michael
  • The oldest sculptures in the church stand on the parapets of the two oratorios. The Christ of the Resurrection on the right is dated to the time before the pilgrimage church was built and may have been in the chapel in the early 17th century. The figure of the Archangel Michael on the left comes from the Baroque period.
  • A small painting from the 16th century is integrated into the high altar from the early 20th century, which reminds of the miraculous healing. It shows Mary and kneeling in front of her the boy who has been healed from epilepsy.
  • The left side altar dates from the time the church was built. In the middle stands in a niche a figure of St. Barbara , on the left side of the figures of the evangelist John , of St. John Nepomuk and on the right side of the holy Joseph and John the Baptist. The altar is crowned by a Pietà .
  • The right side altar served as the high altar until the new altar was erected. The middle of the five figures of saints represents St. Catherine , above a sculpture of the Heart of Jesus .
  • The painting depicting the death of St. Joseph was executed by Januarius Zick in 1740/45 .
  • The older pieces of equipment include the sculptures of St. Ulrich and St. Afra , the diocese saints of the Diocese of Augsburg, to which Flochberg belonged until 1821.
  • The pulpit is a work from 1926.
