Church of the Assumption in Täfertingen

The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Täfertingen , a district of Neusäß , belongs to the parish community Neusäß in the dean's office in Augsburg-Land in the diocese of Augsburg . The Edenberg district of Gailenbach also belongs to the parish . In the 18th century the church was a popular pilgrimage site .

history

The church, a simple hall building with a flat barrel ceiling and retracted choir , is the oldest church in Neusäß. Since 1304 the church was owned by the Augsburg cathedral chapter . In 1685 the patronage right was transferred to the Augsburg Heilig-Geist-Spital . The core of the tower substructure, choir and nave originate from the late Gothic period. The building got its current size in 1710 when the church was rebuilt and increased. The baroque appearance of the church comes from the last renovation by Johann Stephan Gelb in 1791. The church tower with onion dome is attached to the north side of the chancel. It was increased in 1720 by the master builder Johann Braun. The upper floors of the tower in octagon shape and the onion dome date from 1751.

High altar

Relief group on the high altar (around 1510)

The neo-baroque high altar from 1880/90 shows, read from bottom to top, stations on Mary's path to her acceptance into heaven . At about eye level there are two paintings on the high altar of the Annunciation and the Birth of Christ . Above it is a large late Gothic relief group that is ascribed to the school of the Nuremberg master Veit Stoss around 1510. It depicts the death of Mary. Mary kneels, surrounded by the apostles , reading a book that the apostle James is holding. There is a similar representation in the high altar by Veit Stoss in St. Mary's Church in Krakow, where Mary kneels in the presence of the apostles when she dies.

Above this picture there is a plastic representation of Maria in a halo. It is flanked by two angels who carry shield panels with invocations from the Lauretanian litany : "Refugium peccatorum" (Refuge for sinners) and "Mater salvatoris" (Mother of the Redeemer). Above the high altar, a ceiling fresco depicts the Trinity (God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit) who await the arrival of Mary in heaven. It was painted by Johann Josef Anton Huber from Augsburg.

Further design

To the left and right of the high altar is a side altar . The left (northern) side altar contains a late Gothic, 89 centimeter high seated Madonna figure, carved from linden wood, from around 1430.

A large ceiling painting in the nave , which was also created by Johann Josef Anton Huber in 1791, depicts the church's patronage , the Assumption of Mary . It is framed by four oval medallions. These show the four Latin church fathers : Ambrose of Milan (with crosier and beehive), Hieronymus (with trumpet), Augustine of Hippo (with crosier and flaming heart) and Gregory the Great (with pen, dove, papal cross and tiara).

On the left side wall there is a statue of the Archangel Michael with a lance and a devil. Opposite her on the right side wall is St. George with a lance and a dragon. Further figures show Joseph of Nazareth , the foster father of Jesus, Sebastian , Leonhard of Limoges , Ignatius and Ulrich von Augsburg (with fish). There is also a large crucifix on the left side wall .

The rear wall of the nave has a double gallery . In the middle of the lower gallery parapet is a picture of Christ as a child friend. On the upper parapet are angel heads in the middle, on the left a picture of the flight to Egypt and on the right one showing the Good Samaritan. The entrance to the church is decorated with a representation of Christ on the scourge column .

Rectory

To the left of the church is the former parsonage built around 1900 in neo-renaissance style.
