The Assumption of Mary is a Roman Catholic parish church in the neo-renaissance style in Dettingen an der Iller , the foundation stone of which was laid on April 28, 1912. Church and parish are part of the Iller pastoral care unit in the Biberach district in Upper Swabia . The tower of the church is 42 meters high.

history

Another church building, consecrated to Saint Vitus and Saint Agatha , a branch church of the pastoral care unit, is located in the Unterdettinger district on the local road towards Kleinkellmünz. Both were mentioned for the first time in the liber decimationis , the index of the crusade tithe of the diocese of Constance in 1275.

The building plan for the church came from the architect Ulrich Pohlhammer . Construction began in 1911. The then pastor Alois Eisenbarth blessed the newly built church on March 27, 1913. The old Oberdettinger church was demolished and sold. A cross was erected on its site in accordance with the regulations of the Council of Trent . Today the community kindergarten St. Maria is located there. The church is surrounded by a meter high wall, behind which there is no cemetery.

The total construction costs of the church were 150,000 marks . Thanks to generous donations, only 21,000 marks had to be taken out as a loan , which was repaid in 1923. The outbreak of the First World War prevented the consecration of the church by the bishop. It was made up on May 22, 1925 by Bishop Paul Wilhelm von Keppler . His sermon that day was: Why do we build churches?

Building

The church consists of a nave with a flat coffered ceiling. A transept with a coffered barrel vault is located in front of the semicircular choir . In front of the transept on the south side is the classicist pulpit .

The neoclassical altars were designed by Franz Müller from Saulgau . Thematically they relate to the church patron Mary. The right side altar has the theme of the Annunciation and the left side altar has the birth of Christ .

The high altar is flanked by the figures of the parents Marias, Anna and Joachim. The organ comes from the organ building company Albert Reiser from Biberach. The painting of the church was done by the painter Wilhelm Ettle (* 1879) from Ellwangen. The altar leaves come from Karl Baumeister from Munich.
