Maria Antonia of Naples and Sicily (1814–1898)
Maria Antonia Anna von Bourbon, Princess of Naples-Sicily (born December 19, 1814 in Palermo , † November 7, 1898 in Gmunden ) was a born princess of Bourbon-Sicily and by marriage the last Grand Duchess of Tuscany .
Life
Princess Maria Antonia was a daughter of King Francis I of the Two Sicilies and the Infanta Maria Isabel of Spain .
She married her cousin, the widowed Grand Duke Leopold II of Tuscany , son of Grand Duke Ferdinand III , on June 7, 1833 in Naples . of Tuscany and Princess Luisa Maria of Naples-Sicily . From around 1848/49 she was also able to influence her husband politically, speaking out in favor of a close connection between Tuscany and Austria. She also refused concessions to Italian nationalism.
As a result of the Sardinian War , Grand Duke Leopold II left Tuscany with his family on April 27, 1859 and abdicated on July 21 in favor of his son Ferdinand IV . The grand ducal family then settled in Austria. In 1860 Leopold bought the Bohemian Chamber of Commerce Brandeis . After the political situation in Italy had calmed down to some extent, he and his wife went on a trip to Rome in November 1869 , where he died in the arms of his wife on the night of January 29, 1870.
After the death of her husband in Rome, Maria Antonia withdrew to the Traunsee and stayed mostly in Gmunden. Every year she went to the Eternal City , where she prayed at the place where her husband died and paid her respects to the Pope . As a widow she by no means led a lonely life and the sprightly lady drove to her son Ludwig Salvator, who lived on Mallorca , when she was still old. The fact that her favorite son Johann Orth had been missing since 1890 shook her and overshadowed her old age.
Maria Antonia died on November 7th, 1898 at the age of 83 at Schloss Ort in Gmunden. She was buried in the Capuchin Crypt in Vienna .
