Parish church

Maria Rojach is a place with 336 inhabitants at the foot of the Koralpe in the municipality of St. Andrä im Lavanttal . The place is in Lavanttal ( Carinthia ) at 440 meters above sea level.

history

The first mention of today's Gothic pilgrimage church and thus the place took place in 1314; At that time there was already its own parish in Maria Rojach , which indicates a certain importance and settlement. In the church there is a Gothic winged altar (1510) from the Michael Pacher school and a splendid Baroque high altar (early 18th century). Maria Rojach was the summer residence of the bishops of the Lavant diocese in the Middle Ages . To protect against the Turkish invasions, the church was expanded into a fortified church , the remains of which (enclosing wall, corner tower, key loopholes) can still be seen today.

The first elementary school was founded in 1815 and was a parish school. Today's school building was built in 1903. Maria Rojach was an independent parish until 1973, after which it was absorbed into the large parish of St. Andrä. In the direct catchment area of Maria Rojach there are some smaller villages that used to make up the municipality of Maria Rojach: Oberpichling, Ragglbach, Ragglach, Paierdorf, Mitterpichling, Lindhof, Dachberg, Mühldorf, Aich, Unterpichling, Eisdorf, Farrach.

The town, which was originally dominated by agriculture, has changed over the past few decades into a town with many commuters and some small and medium-sized businesses.

The west portal of the Koralm tunnel is located about two kilometers west of Maria Rojach . A so-called exploratory gallery for the tunnel was completed near Paierdorf in 2008.
