Maria of Austria (1531–1581)
Maria of Austria (born May 15, 1531 in Prague , † December 11, 1581 in Hambach Castle ) from the house of the Habsburgs , was an Archduchess of Austria and by marriage Duchess of Jülich, Kleve and Berg .
Life
Maria was a daughter of the later Roman-German Emperor Ferdinand I (1503–1564) from his marriage to Anna Jagiello (1503–1547), daughter of King Vladislav II of Bohemia and Hungary .
She married on July 18, 1546 in Regensburg, Duke Wilhelm V of Jülich-Kleve-Berg , called the rich (1516–1592). The marriage was very laboriously committed in the presence of Emperor Charles V , Mary's uncle, and was one of the agreements in the Treaty of Venlo , in which Wilhelm had to cede the Duchy of Geldern to the House of Austria after the War of the Geldr Succession and committed himself to the Catholic camp of Stay rich. After the marriage with his niece, Emperor Charles V granted Wilhelm the privilege that if the male line of his house died out, his daughters would also be considered capable of succession. The convention toe forced upon Wilhelm was considered happy in spite of everything.
Maria, a granddaughter of Joan the Mad , was considered melancholy and was only temporarily, later completely insane. She was buried in the collegiate church Mariae Himmelfahrt in Kleve .
