from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maria von Sachsen (born December 15, 1515 in Weimar , † January 7, 1583 in Wolgast ) was a Saxon princess from the Ernestine line of the House of Wettin and by marriage Duchess of Pomerania .

Life

Maria was the eldest daughter of the Saxon Elector John the Constant (1468–1532) from his second marriage to Margarete (1494–1521), daughter of Prince Waldemar VI. from Anhalt-Zerbst .

She married Duke Philip I of Pomerania (1515–1560) on February 27, 1536 in Torgau . The couple's marriage is depicted on the so-called Croÿ carpet , which shows the newlyweds and their families as well as the reformers Johannes Bugenhagen , Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon . The carpet comes from the Stettin workshop of Peter Heymans, a Dutch weaver, and is exhibited today in the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald. During the wedding, Martin Luther is said to have slipped one of the wedding rings, whereupon he shouted: “ Devil, it's none of your business!

Sarcophagus of Duchess Maria (3rd from right)

Philip's marriage with Maria meant the annexation of Pomerania to Electoral Saxony with its supremacy in the Protestant imperial estates and was mediated by the reformer Johannes Bugenhagen. Pomerania joined the Schmalkaldic League in the same year .

After the death of her husband, Maria, who was guaranteed the office of Pudagla as Wittum , initially continued to live at Wolgast Castle . Her son Ernst Ludwig , who in 1569 took over the reins of government in the Duchy of Pomerania, granted her the income from the former monastery Pudaglaer goods as jointure and established her in 1574 the Pudagla castle with materials from the demolished monastery buildings.

She was buried in the duke's crypt in Wolgast's St. Petri Church. Her sarcophagus is now reconstructed in the above-ground Greifenkapelle of the above-mentioned church.
