Marian Horzinek

Marian C. Horzinek (born October 3, 1936 in Katowice ; † July 28, 2016 ) was a German veterinarian , virologist and professor at the University of Utrecht .

Life

Horzinek was born in Katowice as the son of an Austrian and a Polish woman. He attended school in Karlsruhe and studied veterinary medicine from 1956 to 1961 at the University of Gießen and the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover . After completing his studies, he first worked at the Hanover Health Department and then moved to the Institute for Virology at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Hanover, where he received his doctorate in 1962. After a research stay in Venezuela, Horzinek went to the Federal Research Institute for Virus Diseases in Tübingen , where he took over the management of the department for exotic animal diseases. In 1970 he completed his habilitation and one year later was offered a professorship for virology at the University of Utrecht. Here he worked as a university lecturer for thirty years until his retirement .

Horzinek initially dealt with the structure and taxonomy of the pesti , arteri and rubella viruses . In his further scientific work he turned to the coronaviruses and mainly researched the pathogenesis of feline infectious peritonitis . He has written over 300 publications and over 40 books, monographs and book chapters. He received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Ghent , Vienna , Uppsala and Guelph and the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover. He was also awarded the Order of the Dutch Lion .

His first doctoral student was Albert Osterhaus .
