The Marienkirche Brandshagen is a village church from the 13th century in the Western Pomeranian district of Brandshagen in the municipality of Sundhagen . It is one of the largest village churches in northern Germany .

history

The church was first mentioned in a document in 1249. It was built by the Cistercians and is a foundation of the Rügen prince Borante von Putbus.

First of all, the Gothic , two-bay , drawn-in, transverse rectangular choir with cross-ribbed vault , the east wall of the nave and the sacristy were built. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Gothic, four-bay, rib-vaulted, three-aisled nave of the hall church and the western steeple incorporated into the nave were added. The upper floor of the tower was partly built in half-timbered style as a roof turret. Stepped outer buttresses support the brick walls.

The last major renovation took place in 1905/1906 at the instigation of the church patroness at the time , Helene von Bismarck-Bohlen auf Niederhof. However, most of the medieval wall paintings uncovered at that time were whitewashed again because restoration was not considered worthwhile.
