action

The old man Archibald lived in a city in the Middle Ages . He is educated and, unlike many people, can read. That makes it strange to ordinary people. Someone they distrust. Eventually he is evicted from the city. On his way out of town, a carriage drives past him, a woman is sitting on it with a child in her arms. When he went a little further along the way, he found a baby. On his shirt is written: My name is Mariken, take good care of me.

A few years later. Mariken is now 8 years old. The two live in a hut in the forest. The townspeople believe that evil spirits live in this forest, so they are safe there. Archibald taught Mariken to read and write. He taught them an open approach to the world, which is vastly different from the superstitious medieval world.

One day a hiker comes through the forest. Marked by superstition, he thinks Mariken is a forest rascal. At night the wanderer kills Archibald's goat because he is hungry. When Mariken notices this the next day, she sets off for the city alone. At the edge of the forest she meets the first house. An old woman lives there - the black widow. Mariken thinks this is the devil's child and locks her up. In her prison she meets Rattenjan, who is also being held captive by the black widow. Rats obey him on word, hence his name. He makes sure that the rats bite through Mariken's bonds. However, he himself is chained with iron. And so Mariken first has to flee alone.

Once in town, she tries to get a goat. Which turns out to be impossible for her because she has no money. She meets jugglers . A man in a devil's costume introduces himself to her as a devil. But Mariken is not afraid of the devil. From Archibald she had learned that there is a devil and an angel in every person. And so she realizes very quickly that this is not the devil. She finds shelter with the jugglers' troupe. With Isabella from this group, Mariken finds a surrogate mother. She lives with the Teufel actor, but the two have not yet had any children.

In the meantime Archibald has gone in search of Mariken. But he can't find her in town. The jugglers' troupe is supposed to give the city a performance for the countess. She is bored in her castle. During the introduction, the Countess becomes aware of Mariken. That Mariken shows no humility at all in front of the ruler annoys the countess, on the other hand it also makes her curious. She decides to keep the child because she has no children of her own either. The jugglers are chased out of the castle. Mariken can finally soften the countess's heart, but does not feel at home in the castle.

In the meantime, a quarrel has broken out between Isabella and the "devil". She tells him to go to the countess to get the child back. However, this is too cowardly. So Isabella sets out on her own. She risks being captured by the countess. But she finally agrees. And so Mariken comes back to Isabella.

On the way out of the city, the juggler troop passes the house of the "Black Widow". Now the "devil" can prove his courage. He helps Mariken to free the Rattenjan. In the forest she finally meets Archibald again. It turns out that as a young man Archibald also left his baby alone. When Griet, the mother of the "devil", was pregnant, he ran away.

Mariken wants to stay with Archibald, but he tells her that Mariken has found a new family. With Isabella and the "devil" as her parents, and Rattenjan as her brother. And so Mariken finally realizes that she has found what she was looking for, a family.

Reviews

"Medieval fairytale-like children's film as a timeless parable of growing up, which dispenses with simple good-bad schemes and above all captivates with the rousing play of the little leading actress."
