Mario Agrifoglio (born June 4, 1877 Genoa , † March 27, 1972 Roasio ) was an Italian painter , fresco painter and sculptor .

Life

Mario Agrifoglio studied at the Accademia ligustica di belle arti in Genoa until 1895 , and made his debut in 1892 with a drawing by Christopher Columbus , which was exhibited in Genoa. He received a five-year scholarship from the academy, which enabled him to study in Rome . During his stay there from 1904 to 1908 he devoted himself to portrait, landscape, genre painting and still life, moved into a studio in the Villa Strohl-Fern and met and visited the painter Antonio Mancini . During this time Agrifolio participated in exhibitions of the group "In Arte Libertas" and the "Associazione degli Acquarellisti Romani".

In 1912 he went to study in Paris, took courses at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and improved his drawing talent, deepened his artistic knowledge and perfected his stylistic palette. Mario Agrifoglio stayed in Paris until 1918, came into contact with the avant-garde of contemporary art during the pre-war climate and associated with the Italian artists resident there, including Giovanni Boldini . But his way was figurative painting , which he reproduced on canvas without compromise.

Back in Genoa, Agrifoglio became a teacher at the Ligurian Art Academy ( Accademia ligustica di belle arti ), first for drawing and painting and from 1934 for sculpture . He mainly worked as a portraitist , without neglecting the sculptures that are occupied in the monumental cemetery Staglieno . Some of his works can be found in the picture gallery of the Chamber of Commerce of Genoa and the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Genoa-Nervi .

In 1972 Mario Agrifoglio died in Roasio, in the province of Vercelli .
