Mario Fortunato (journalist)
Mario Fortunato (born September 2, 1958 in Cirò , Crotone province in the Calabria region ) is an Italian journalist and writer .
Life
Fortunato studied philosophy in Rome. From 1983 he worked as a cultural journalist , first at Rai 3 and for various magazines. His first stories appeared in 1988 under the title Luoghi Naturali (Eng. City in penumbra , 1992), published by Einaudi .
He was a member of the Italian Film Commission and headed the Italian Cultural Institute in London from 2002 to 2004 . When Silvio Berlusconi wanted to depose him in 2002 because of his homosexuality , international protests began, including from Salman Rushdie , Umberto Eco , Bernardo Bertolucci and the Nobel Prize winners Doris Lessing and Harold Pinter . Fortunato was eventually confirmed in office.
From 2004 to March 2009 he headed the Fondazione Antonio Ratti Foundation in Como .
Fortunato worked as an editor for the publishers Einaudi and Edizione Nottetempo and wrote scripts. He regularly published cultural reviews in L'Espresso and La Stampa .
Many of his narrative and scientific texts have appeared in edited volumes, and his books have been translated into various languages. Fortunato was awarded the Premio Mondello e Super Mondello for his novel I giorni innocenti della guerra (Eng. Innocent Days in War , 2010) .
Fortunato lives in Rome and London .
