Jan Koneffke

Jan Koneffke (born November 19, 1960 in Darmstadt ) is a German writer and translator .

Life

Jan Koneffke, son of the educational theorist and professor Gernot Koneffke (1927–2008), spent his youth mainly in Darmstadt and briefly in Frankfurt am Main and Braunschweig . In 1980 he graduated from Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium in Darmstadt. From 1981, studied it philosophy and German literature at the Free University of Berlin ; In 1987 he obtained his master's degree with a thesis on Eduard Mörike .

He then lived as a freelance writer in Berlin . In 1994 he married his long-time childhood friend. A daughter emerged from this marriage. After receiving a Villa Massimo scholarship , he went to Rome in 1995 , where he lived until 2003. Since then he has lived in Vienna and Bucharest , the home of his second wife.

Jan Koneffke writes poetry , which is characterized by an unusual, fantastic imagery and the ironic use of an ancient style. In his novels and short stories he often deals with the problem of loss of identity. For his novel A Sunday Child, he evaluated letters from his father's estate.

Koneffke has been a member of the PEN Center Germany since 2017 .
