Leonce and Lena Prize
The Leonce and Lena Prize , named after Georg Büchner's comedy , is a literary prize that the City of Darmstadt has been awarding every two years to a young poet since 1968. The prize is endowed with 8,000 euros. The two sponsorship prizes also awarded , each worth 4,000 euros, have been called Wolfgang Weyrauch sponsorship awards since 1997 .
The Leonce and Lena Prize is the most important prize for young authors in the field of poetry in German-speaking countries. It is awarded as part of the Literary March competition, in which up to 1,000 authors took part in each of the 1980s. An application fee of 10 euros was introduced for 2005, whereupon the number of applicants fell sharply: for 2005 only 528 authors applied. The fee for the 2007 competition was increased to 20 euros, which further reduced the number of applicants. The application is now free of charge.
