Mario Zafred

Mario Zafred (born February 21, 1922 in Trieste , Friuli-Venezia Giulia , † May 22, 1987 in Rome ) was an Italian composer , conductor and music critic . In addition to classical compositions for the concert hall, he also created some musical works for Italian cinema in the 1950s. Including the music scores for films like Achtung, Banditi! , Chronicle of poor lovers , The beautiful girls of Florence or The woman of the day .

life and work

Mario Zafred was born in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in 1922 . In 1946 Zafred studied composition with his well-known compatriot Ildebrando Pizzetti at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome . After completing his studies, he worked as a music critic for the Italian daily L'Unità from 1949 . In accordance with his political convictions, he used a simplified formal language in his own music similar to the models of well-known Soviet composers. His classical works include five symphonies , a cantata for viola and orchestra , various string quartets , three piano trios and a concerto for two pianos.

In the 1950s he also composed some film scores for Italian cinema. Including the two soundtracks to Carlo Lizzani's dramas Attention, Banditi! and Chronicle of poor lovers , where he also took over the direction of the latter and was awarded the Nastro d'Argento for best film music in 1954 for this film . He also wrote the music for Valerio Zurlini's comedy The Beautiful Girls of Florence and for Francesco Maselli's drama The Woman of the Day with Virna Lisi in the leading role. He also worked with the directors Gianni Puccini and Tullio Covaz . His last film composition was made in 1958 for the comedy Giovani mariti by director Mauro Bolognini .

In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, he was artistic director of the Rome Opera from 1968 to 1974 and president of the Santa Cecilia Academy from 1973 to 1983 .

Mario Zafred died on May 22, 1987 at the age of 65 in Rome.
