Markku Kyllönen (born February 15, 1962 in Joensuu ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played for the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League from 1980 to 2000 .
Career
Markku Kyllönen began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown at Jokipojat , for whose professional team he was active from 1980 to 1985 in the second-rate I divisioona. The winger then received a contract with SaiPa Lappeenranta from the SM-liiga for the 1985/86 season , for which he scored twelve goals in 34 games in his rookie year in the top Finnish division and gave as many templates. In the following two years he played for Kärpät Oulu , with whom he failed in the 1986/87 season in the playoff final for the Finnish championship title at Tappara Tampere .
During his time at Kärpät Oulu, Kyllönen was selected in the eighth round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft as the 163rd player of the Winnipeg Jets . For the Canadians he completed nine games in the National Hockey League in the 1988/89 season , in which he gave two assists. The entire rest of the season, however, he spent with Winnipeg's farm team , the Moncton Hawks , in the American Hockey League , for which he scored 14 goals in 60 games and gave 20 templates. After his year in North America, the five-time international returned to his hometown club Jokipojat, which had meanwhile been promoted to the SM-liiga. With Jokipojat he went through a turbulent time in the following years. After relegation in 1990 he succeeded with his team first the direct rise, before he relegated again with Jokipojat in the 1991/92 season in the I divisioona. Finally, his team even got relegated to the third division, in which he paused with ice hockey after the 1994/95 season.
For the 1996/97 season, Kyllönen continued his career in other European countries and signed a contract with the Newcastle Cobras from the British Ice Hockey Superleague . For the English, he scored twelve points scorer in 25 games, five of which were goals. In the 1997/98 season the Finn went on the hunt for goals for EV Landsberg in the second German ice hockey division. The former NHL player last played for Odense IK in the Danish AL-Bank Ligaen from 1998 to 2000 before retiring at the age of 38.
