Markus Lemke
Markus Lemke (* 1965 in Münster , Westphalia ) is a German literary translator from Ivrit and Arabic.
Life
Lemke studied Oriental Philology and Islamic Studies at the Ruhr University Bochum and the Ain-Schams University in Cairo . He has been interpreting and translating from Hebrew and Arabic since 1995.
Lemke has translated historical non-fiction books by Daniel Blatman , Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi , Shlomo Sand and Idith Zertal , including Tom Segev's biography about Simon Wiesenthal . He translated epic literature by Leah Aini , Yossi Avni , Alon Hilu , Yoram Kaniuk , Dov Kimchi, Chaim Lapid, Dror Mishani , Eshkol Nevo and Joshua Sobol . In 2013, he himself presented Blatman's book about the death marches of concentration camp prisoners in the final phase of National Socialism.
In 2000 and again in 2004, Lemke received the Hamburg Prize for Literary Translations . Lemke lives in Hamburg .
