Markus Penz

Markus Penz (born June 6, 1975 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian skeleton driver .

Markus Penz started skeleton in 1995 and has been part of the Austrian national team since 2002. He is trained by Christian Steger, Manfred Maier and Fran Aue. In January 2000 Penz made his debut as 46th in Lillehammer in the Skeleton World Cup . In November 2000 he started in the newly established Skeleton European Cup and already achieved second place in his first race in Igls and in the following race in Altenberg . He finished the overall ranking as the first winner of the European Cup. A year later , he finished second behind Andy Böhme .

In November 2003, Penz finished tenth in Calgary for the first time a place in the top ten at a World Cup race. In 2004 he was Austrian runner- up behind Martin Rettl and sixth at the World Championships in Königssee . In December of that year he finished third in Igls for the first time on the podium in a World Cup race. The following year he was again Austrian runner-up and sixth in the World Cup in Calgary. In 2006 Penz became Austrian champion for the first time and came third at the European Championships in St. Moritz . At the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin , he finished 16th. The 2006/07 season was very successful. In Königssee, Penz was runner-up behind Alexander Tretyakov and fourth at the World Championships in St. Moritz. He was also fourth in the overall World Cup .
