life and work
Markwart Michler was the son of the classical philologist Waldemar Michler and Leonie Frieda geb. Olleck. His father was a teacher at the Elisabet-Gymnasium .
Markwart Michler studied medicine at the University of Breslau from 1942 . In 1944 he was called up for front service in World War II and had to interrupt his studies. After his return from captivity, he continued his studies from 1946 to 1949 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He then worked as an assistant doctor at the Municipal Hospital in Berlin-Neukölln (1950–1951), at the Auguste Viktoria Hospital in Berlin-Schöneberg (1951–1956) and at the Evangelical Forest Hospital in Berlin-Spandau . During this time he qualified in the fields of surgery (1957) and orthopedics (1958) and completed his dissertation, with which he obtained a doctorate from the Free University of Berlin on June 10, 1958. med. received his doctorate .
After completing his doctorate and the specialist examination, Michler was the head physiotherapist in the orthopedic department of the forest hospital from 1958 to 1961 . His interest in the history of medicine finally prompted him to give up clinical work and to accept an assistant position at the University of Bonn in 1961 . From there he moved to the Institute for Medical History at the University of Hamburg as a lecturer in 1964 and completed his habilitation there in 1965.
In 1965 he followed a call to the Justus Liebig University in Giessen , where he took over the newly established chair for the history of medicine. Together with his assistant at the time, Jost Benedum , he headed the Institute for Medical History and wrote the introduction to medical terminology known as "Michler-Benedum" , which was reprinted several times
For health reasons, Michler retired in 1973 (Benedum became his successor). He moved with his wife to the spa town of Bad Brückenau , where he practiced as an orthopedist and spa doctor from 1974 to 1990. He continued his scientific work as long as his health permitted him. He bequeathed his private library to the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) .
Michler's research focused on the historical development of medicine from Greco-Roman antiquity to the 19th century. In accordance with his humanistic education, Michler worked in an interdisciplinary manner, combining methods from natural, historical and linguistic science. He published numerous monographs, essays and articles on various topics, among which his own focus areas (orthopedics and surgery) were particularly prominent. He also worked on encyclopaedic reference works, such as the Neue Deutsche Biographie , Paulys Realenzyklopädie der Classical Antiquities (RE) and the Encyclopedia Medical History.
