Stephen Williams (born August 23, 1963 in Port Talbot , United Kingdom ) is a British architect and interior designer living in Hamburg .

Life

Stephen Williams grew up as the son of an engineer and a teacher in his native Port Talbot in Wales . The family later moved to the small town of Bridgnorth in the West Midlands , where he became enthusiastic about punk music as a student . After completing his school education, Williams studied architecture at the Birmingham Polytechnic in Birmingham from 1982 to 1985 and at the Canterbury College of Art in Canterbury from 1986 to 1988 . He graduated in 1988 with a diploma.

From 1985 to 1986 Williams worked in London at CZWG Architects and at Elia Zenghelis and Rem Koolhaas in their Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). In 1988 he started his own business in Bristol and ran an architecture office there until 1991. In 1990 he became a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects . Williams moved to Germany in 1992 , where he initially worked from 1992 to 1993 as a competition architect for Christoph Ingenhoven in Düsseldorf . In 1993 he moved to the Alsop  & Störmer office community in Hamburg, where he worked as a design architect until 1997. From 1997 to 1999 Williams worked as a freelancer at Bothe Richter Teherani in Hamburg. In 1999 he also taught as a tutor at the University of Wales , Cardiff .

In 2000 he founded the architecture and design office Stephen Williams Architects in Hamburg , which has been operating under the name Stephen Williams Associates GmbH (SWA) since 2008. He has worked with the Hamburg architect and urban planner Julia Erdmann , who was an associated partner at SWA from 2009 to 2016 , among others . The office is now known for numerous projects, such as in the area of ​​the design of city districts ( e.g. Hamburg's city courtyards ), working environments (e.g. Jung von Matt ) and hotels (e.g. 25hours Hotel Hamburg HafenCity ).

He is an active member of the Urban Land Institute .

Stephen Williams is married and lives with his wife in his adopted home of Hamburg.

Prices

Williams has won several architectural competitions to date and has been invited to take part in restricted or restricted competitions, such as for the headquarters of Motor Music in Berlin (2002), the headquarters of the Universal Music Group in Berlin (2002), and the Pizza Amano restaurant in the delivery center Autostadt of Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg (2003) and the Beef Club restaurant in Autostadt in Wolfsburg (2004) as well as for the construction of a new hotel and hostel in Hamburg (2016) and for the new construction of a stilwerk hotel in Travemünde (2018).
