Marlise Wendels

Marlise Wendels (born April 28, 1923 in the Saar area ; † August 23, 2012 in Schwalbach , Saar ) was a German opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Marlise Wendels joined the Frankfurt Opera as a choir player in 1952 . In 1956 she was engaged as a soloist there. She was a member of the ensemble until 1988. In 1983 she was appointed Frankfurter Kammersängerin . During her career she never canceled a performance.

Wendels played Gretel in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel , first sang the shepherd in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser and the Singers' War on Wartburg and the 1st Queen of the Night in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and later also roles like Micaela in Georges Bizet's Carmen , Freia in Wagner's Das Rheingold , Olympia in Jacques Offenbach's Hoffmanns stories , Marie in Bedřich Smetana's The Bartered Bride , Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss , Liu in Giacomo Puccini's Turandot and Regina in Paul Hindemith's Mathis der Maler .

Wendels was also seen on television, for example in Zum Blauen Bock next to Otto Höpfner and Heinz Schenk , in Hans-Joachim Kulenkampff's One Will Win or in a ZDF program dedicated to the operetta melodies of Franz Lehár , moderated by Friedrich Schönfelder .

One of her sponsors was Sir Georg Solti , who was general music director at the Frankfurt Opera from 1952 to 1961 under the management of Harry Buckwitz .

She died after a long illness at the age of 89.
