The Swiss motor ship Mars has been based in Arbon since it was commissioned in 1922 , has been in service on Lake Constance for almost a hundred years , making it one of the oldest passenger ships there .

history

The Mars has been owned by three owners since 1922:

Boat operation Zels

The “dissimilar sisters” Mars (right) and Arbor Felix

The Berlin- based boat rental company Gustav Zels commissioned Ehrhardswerft in Berlin-Spandau to build the Mars in 1922 . The motorboat, which was then approved for 60 people, is 12.5 meters long, 2.62 meters wide and displaces 6.5 t. It was launched and put into service in 1922 . The boat was so successful in private excursion and scheduled traffic that Zels had the three meter longer and one meter wider Arbor Felix built by the Vogt-Gut shipyard in Arbon in 1934 according to the plans of Mars , which is also still in operation in Arbon. In 1977 the Mars was retired after 55 years as a Zels passenger ship, only interrupted by the war-related shutdown .

SLRG Arbon

The Swiss Lifesaving Society (SLRG) in Arbon acquired Mars , known for its good seaworthiness , in 1977 , which was already requested by the SLRG as a feeder boat under Zels. Now they are used as a lifeboat , for diving missions and for excursions with a maximum of 30 passengers . The boat was overhauled and modernized and received a revised Saurer - diesel engine with reversing gear . Equipped with rescue equipment, two searchlights , a radio station and a motorized syringe for fire fighting , the Mars was ideally suited for sea rescue services. In 1981/82 the driver's cab was raised, the superstructure received a new aluminum roof and an aluminum front instead of the old wooden one.

Mars Association

When the Mars was taken out of service by the SLRG in 1990 and offered for sale, the Mars Association founded for this purpose in 1991 took over the boat and received it for Arbon. The special rescue equipment was removed and the driver's cab was equipped with radar , GPS technology and an echo sounder . The Mars rescue equipment contains special life jackets for children. The principles of the association include maintaining the boat independently and training as many members as possible to become skippers who are familiar with the old and modern technology of the boat. Excursion trips are carried out on a donation basis for funding.
