The Martin-Gropius-Bau in Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein

The Martin-Gropius-Bau in Koblenz is the main building of the former Prussian garrison hospital of the Koblenz Fortress . After thorough renovation, the building in the Ehrenbreitstein district has been used as a residential building since 2011.

history

The building erected by architects Martin Gropius and Heino Schmieden 1876–1877 under the direction of Garrison Construction Inspector Goldmann is located in the Ehrenbreitstein district on the old Kolonnenwege to Asterstein and initially housed a military hospital for the troops on the right bank of the Rhine with 96 beds. The building was expanded between 1878 and 1893. From 1932 to 1939 the Antoniuskolleg of the Capuchin School was located here , and during World War II a school for NCOs and a reserve hospital .

After the war, bombed-out families found a place to stay here for a short time before the building was again used as a boarding school for the Capuchins from 1951 to 1959 . Later storage and offices were located on the lower floors. The city of Koblenz acquired the former military hospital buildings in 1985 in order to house the Ehrenbreitstein primary school there. For this purpose, only the former isolation house (for infectious patients) of the hospital was used and an annex was added, the main building became the property of the state in 1989. His plans to house the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and an archaeological collection in the house failed because of the immense renovation and expansion costs of around 15 million Deutschmarks . Some outbuildings were demolished in the 1980s to 1990s.

After decades of vacancy and renovation plans that go back to 1996, an investor was finally found in 2009 to take over the expensive renovation of the building, which has been a listed building since 2008. The measure was supported by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate with funding. It was planned to use the building as a residential building, whereby the requirements of the preservation of monuments should be preserved. The renovation work began in mid-2010 and was completed in 2011. In the course of the renovation, the facade of the building was changed by adding balconies to the front and elevator shafts and stairways to the rear. Inside, the large room heights in particular presented a challenge; they were exploited by installing galleries.

construction

The Martin-Gropius-Bau is an authentic document of the brick architecture of the Berlin School according to Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The three-storey building with fifteen axes above a high basement with a mezzanine is characterized by 3.60 m high arched windows with sandstone surrounds , 4.80 m high ceilings, a clinker brick facade and a central projectile for the stairwell. The flat hipped roof rises above a console-supported cornice .
