Career
Martin Štěpánek studied at the Technical University of Brno and began grass skiing as summer training for alpine skiing . Eventually grass skiing became his main sport, but in winter he still competes in alpine ski races. So far, he has achieved several top 10 places in FIS and student races.
Štěpánek celebrated his first major successes in grass skiing at the Junior World Championships . In 2001 he won gold in the Super-G and in 2002 he won three golds in the slalom, in the Super-G and in the combined, as well as silver in the giant slalom. At world championships in the general class he achieved numerous top 10 placements and narrowly missed the medal ranks several times. At the 2003 World Championships in Castione della Presolana , ninth place in the giant slalom was his only result. Two years later he reached sixth place in the Super-G at the 2005 World Championships in Dizin , eleventh place in slalom and eighth place in the combination. In the giant slalom, however, he was disqualified after a goal error in the first round. Just behind the medal ranks remained Štěpánek at the 2007 World Cup in Olešnice v Orlických horách . He was fourth in the super combined, fifth in the giant slalom and eighth in the super G. Also at the 2009 World Championships in Rettenbach , he just missed the medal ranks. In slalom and super-G he was fourth, each less than a tenth of a second behind the bronze rank, and in giant slalom he was fifth. He didn't finish in the super combination. Once again, Štěpánek just missed the medal ranks at the 2011 World Championships in Goldingen . He finished fourth in the super combined, fifth in the super-G and seventh in the giant slalom. In the slalom he was eliminated in the first round.
In the World Cup , Martin Štěpánek was initially able to regularly rank among the top 20 and sometimes also among the top ten in the overall ranking. From 2007 to 2012 he was among the top six in the overall World Cup six times in a row: In the 2007 season , he achieved sixth place overall with a second place in the first slalom in Sattel and another four top 5 results. In 2008 he won the slalom in Čenkovice , was third in the super combination of Rettenbach, was in the top ten five times and was fifth in the overall World Cup. In the 2009 season , Štěpánek won the Super-G from Marbachegg , finished second in the slalom from Čenkovice and reached fourth place overall with four more top 5 results. Martin Štěpánek also came fourth overall in the 2010 season . His best race result of the year was second place in the giant slalom in Cesana San Sicario , and he finished third three times.
