BfV controversy

In the summer of 2014 his work as a full-time employee of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution became known. Katharina König-Preuss , who is a member of the state parliament of Thuringia in the investigation committee into the terrorist organization National Socialist Underground (NSU), published on Twitter that Martin Thein, according to the book "Heimatschutz - The state and the series of murders of the NSU" as an undercover agent -Guide was active. Some bloggers and journalists who had been in contact with Martin Thein reacted to this before established media such as 3sat , WDR , Tagesspiegel and Spiegel also took up the case. As a result, Thein was no longer available to media representatives. It was discussed whether his involvement in the field of fan culture was in the context of increased interest from criminal investigation authorities and whether he had moved in the field for professional reasons for the BfV. The fan researcher Gerd Dembowski described his behavior as "very active". The political scientist Hajo Funke accused him of "abuse of science". The secret service expert Dirk Laabs considered it implausible , because of the effort, that Martin Thein had dealt with the fan scene solely out of personal interest. In fan scenes in which Thein was researching, Ultras are said to have been approached by the protection of the constitution.
