Martina Emsel

Martina Emsel (* 12. April 1955 as Martina Keller in Halle (Saale) ) is a German language and translation scientist . She teaches at the Institute for Applied Linguistics and Translatology (IALT) at the University of Leipzig .

Life and academic career

From 1973 to 1977 Martina Emsel studied at the theoretical and applied linguistics section of the then Karl Marx University in Leipzig in the field of linguists. In the academic year 1975/76 she completed a partial study abroad at the University of Havana in Cuba and in the last academic year a supplementary study in Portuguese. From 1977 to 1981, after completing her undergraduate studies, which she completed as a language mediator for French and Spanish, she completed research studies in the field of Romance studies in the field of Hispanic linguistics . She then worked for two years as a research assistant in the academic field of Spanish language ( linguistics and translation studies ). In 1982 she did her doctorate with a thesis on the topic of Spanish vocabulary development in the use of political language, mainly based on Argentine press texts . Since 1983 she has been a research assistant at the Institute for Applied Linguistics and Translatology in the Ibero-Romance Linguistics and Translation Studies department at the University of Leipzig (or the institute's predecessor institutions: Theoretical and Applied Linguistics Section and the Institute for Linguistics and Translation Studies). In the 1987/88 academic year she completed further training in German as a foreign language . Since 1997 she has been a sworn interpreter and translator as well as a linguistic expert in French and Spanish for courts and notaries in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Martina Emsel has two sons and lives in Halle (Saale) .

Research priorities

Teaching

Martina Emsel teaches in the areas of translation , translation studies and language comparison, Hispanic linguistics (word formation, text analysis), interpreting and is in charge of the conceptual revision and editing of the study and examination regulations for the Bachelor's degree in Translation, the Master's degree in Translatology and Conference Interpreting and the doctoral degree in Translatology and applied linguistics.

  • Head of the State Representation of the Academic Mittelbau Saxony (since 1998)

International projects

  • 2011 and 2012: “ISoTra” international summer course in translation with Latin American partners at the University of Leipzig
  • 2000–2008: Head of the alumni project with Cuba ( DAAD funding) and seminar speaker
  • since 1996: Coordination and technical support in Erasmus programs with around 20 university partners in Spain for the field of translatology
  • 1975/1976: Coordinator and specialist representative of the University of Leipzig in the TEMPUS preliminary project P-JEP-02267-95 with the State Pedagogical University Vladimir (Russia), the University of Linköping (Sweden) and the University of Granada (Spain) (main coordinator)
