Schild took part in FIS races for the first time in December 1995 , and was used in the European Cup from December 1999 . She contested her first World Cup race on December 21, 2001 in St. Moritz , where she finished 29th. In the following seasons she was able to establish herself just behind the world's best: best results were a 13th place in the 2002/03 season and a 6th place in the 2003/04 season. During the 2004/05 season, however, she was far from able to build on these services. At the end of 2005 she caught up again, and on December 16, 2006, she achieved her first podium finish with third place in the Super-G on the Reiteralm .
The highlight of her career so far is winning the downhill silver medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics , where she only had to admit defeat to Michaela Dorfmeister . This result was not entirely surprising, because Schild had already shown good performance in the training runs. In the Olympic Super-G, she reached sixth place. At the 2007 World Cup in Åre , she was twelfth in the Super-G.
On December 2, 2007, Schild won her first race in the Ski World Cup, the Super-G in Lake Louise . After the turn of the year, her results deteriorated again and after she had not finished in the top 20 in any race in the first few months of the 2008/09 season, she missed the team's internal qualification for the World Championship in Val-d'Isère . In the 2009/10 season , on January 10th, she was third in the Super-G from Haus for the first time in over two years. A little later, however, the season was over for them. During downhill training in St. Moritz on January 27, 2010, Schild suffered a cruciate ligament rupture and a meniscus injury in his left knee. She had to end the season and could not take part in the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver .
After Schild had failed to achieve a top result in the 2010/11 season and was therefore absent from the World Championship again , she was among the top five in two Super-Gs in winter 2011/12 . In November 2012, she had to undergo disc surgery because of back pain.
Due to persistent back problems, Martina Schild announced her retirement from active ski racing before the start of the 2013/14 season .
