Mateus Fernandes (born March 2, 1973 in Uatucarbau , Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese police officer. Since 2019 he has been the deputy general commander and thus the second highest officer of the East Timorese National Police (PNTL).

Career

From 1980 to 1986 Fernandes attended the Uatucarbau Primary School, the Uatucarbau Secondary School until 1990 and the Viqueque Secondary School until 1993 . By 1996 he completed a bachelor's degree at the Universidade Undana Kupang and from 2005 to 2010 he studied further at the Universidade da Paz (UNPAZ) in "International Relations", with subsequent post-graduation until 2012, and in the same period in "Police Science" at the University of Indonesia with a master's degree. Fernandes has also attended police courses in the United States , Great Britain , Indonesia , Australia , Malaysia and Japan .

From April to August 2001 Fernandes was the chief investigator of the police in the municipality of Viqueque , from September to December 2001 he was deputy police commander in the municipality and from December onwards the commandant. Fernandes was appointed Commander for National Operations in February 2002 and Liaison Officer between the PNTL and the Defense Forces (F-FDTL) in September 2005 . He held the office until March 2006 when the serious unrest broke out.

From May 2007 to October 2009 Fernandes was deputy commissioner of the operational police. In 2008 he served as the President's adjunct . During this time the attack on President José Ramos-Horta took place . From 2010 Fernandes held the rank of Superintendente Xefé . From June 6th to October 8th, 2012 he served as national head of Interpol and from February 19, 2014 as commander of the PNTL administration. Fernandes was the National Police Operations Commanders from August 15, 2018 to March 26, 2019. On March 27, 2019, Fernandes was appointed Deputy Commander General and received the rank of Commissioner. He follows Faustino da Costa , who was promoted to commandant general.

Awards

Fernandes is the recipient of the Medal for Good Conduct (Medalla Komportamentu Ezemplár) in gold and the Medalla Públiku in silver of the Ministry of Defense, as well as the Medalha Halibur and the Ordem de Timor-Leste . In addition there are the Medalla (Kuadro Onra) Individuál Sertifikadu des Lemhannas RI (National Resistance) and the Estrela Emblemátika (Bintang Andalan).
