Mathews Phosa

Nakedi Mathews Phosa (born September 1, 1952 in Bushbuckridge ) is a South African lawyer , entrepreneur and politician. Since 2007 he has been treasurer of the African National Congress (ANC).

Life during apartheid

Phosa grew during his primary school days with his grandparents near Potgietersrus in rural surroundings and attended since 1967 as a boarder the Maripi High School in Acornhoek ( Eastern Transvaal ), where he in 1971 his Matric received. Even at school he came into uncomfortable contact with the security police due to his political thinking . In 1967 he enrolled in the BProc LLB at the University of the North. The study of jurisprudence , he graduated with a Bachelor and the Master of Laws at the University of the North into the 1977th He joined the ANC and worked as an activist for the party. He founded the first black law firm in Nelspruit in 1981 , working primarily for the ANC. In 1985 he went into exile in Mozambique after he had been informed by the ANC intelligence service that South African security forces were to kill him with a letter bomb on behalf of the apartheid regime . In Mozambique he was the head of the regional Political-Military Committee of the ANC with headquarters in Maputo , from where actions of the Umkhonto we Sizwe in the Easten Transvaal were organized. Phosa was one of the first ANC members to return to South Africa from exile at great personal risk. From the beginning he was involved in many negotiations with the government representatives at the time. After the ANC moved into its headquarters in Johannesburg , Phosa took over the management of the constitutional and legal affairs department. He also worked as the head of the ANC in the Eastern Transvaal Region . In the 1994 elections he headed the ANC's list, won 81 percent of all votes with all candidates and became Prime Minister of the Eastern Transvaal Province .

After his election to the National Assembly , of which he was a member from 1999 , he resigned both offices . He then worked as CEO of various companies , including in the mining business , and became a partner in a law firm. In 2007 he was elected Treasurer General at the 52nd National Conference of the ANC. This makes him one of the six most important officials in the party.

In the dispute between the ANC and the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) over the behavior of the suspended President Julius Malema , Phosa supported Malema indirectly.

Phosa speaks numerous languages; North Sotho , Swazi , South Sotho , Tswana , English , isiZulu , Afrikaans and Portuguese . He published poetic texts in Afrikaans and English in literary magazines such as Standpunte , New Classic and Staffrider . Phosa is married to the social worker Yvonne Nkwenkwezi. In 1999 he published a volume of poetry under the title Deur die oog van 'n naald (German about: "Through the eye of a needle").
