He himself married Marie Worm, daughter of Ole Worm (1588–1654). The two generals Michael von Numsen (1686–1757) and Christian Wilhelm von Numsen (1687–1756) were sons from this marriage.

Numsen became a soldier at the age of 16 and was a cornet in the Zealand Regiment in 1670 . During the War of Scania he quickly advanced to higher ranks, was lieutenant in 1676 , captain and adjutant general in 1677 and lieutenant colonel in 1678 . He was then promoted to colonel and regiment chief of the 2nd Seeland cavalry regiment in 1685 . Numsen also received a coat of arms letter on May 24, 1688 in the course of his ennoblement . From 1701 to 1703 he was in the Netherlands with his contingent . Afterwards he switched to the administrative service due to limited field usability and in 1710 became General War Commissioner . In 1711 he received the title of major general and in 1717 was admitted to the Dannebrogden . From 1720 to 1730 he was the successor or representative of Jobst Scholten, head of the military academy.
