Mathis is a city in San Patricio County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city in southeast Texas at 359 Farm Road, off Interstate 37 in the west of the county, is 50 miles to the southeast from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of 5.1 km 2 . In the west, the place borders on the reservoir Lake Corpus Christi , which was created by damming the Nueces River and which supplies the city of Corpus Christi with drinking water , but is also a popular leisure region.
history
The place was founded and named after Thomas H. Mathis in 1887 when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway laid its tracks through the county.

According to the 2000 census, 5,034 people lived here in 1,502 households and 1,203 families. The population density was 976.7 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 53.83% White, 1.63% African American, 0.91% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, and 40.09% other ethnic groups. About 3.02% were mixed race and 90.50% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,502 households, 43.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.6% of these were married couples living together. 21.5% were single mothers and 19.9% were non-families. 17.8% of all households were single households and there were people living in 9.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.31 and the average family size was 3.77 people.
34.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.6% 18 to 24, 25.8% 25 to 44, 17.4% 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 94.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 91.6 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 20,015 , and the median income for a family is $ 23,793. Males had a median income of $ 25,945 versus $ 18,458 for females. The per capita income was $ 8,516. 38.2% of the population and 31.4% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 49.3% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 30.0% were 65 or older.
