Matthäus Kolweiß
Matthäus Kolweiß (born December 25, 1620 in Judenburg , † February 9, 1695 in Lilienfeld ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman , Cistercian , abbot of Lilienfeld monastery and rector of the University of Vienna .
Life
A few years after beginning his theology studies in Vienna (Austria), Kolweiß made his profession in 1640 in Lilienfeld Abbey. In 1647 he was ordained a priest , in 1649 he received his doctorate in theology in Vienna. He initially worked as a teacher at the collegiate high school and as a preacher in Lilienfeld. In 1650 his confreres from Abbey Lilienfeld elected him their abbot.
The Lilienfelder Josefbruderschaft was founded under Abbot Matthäus Kolweiß (1653). He had the convent building on the east side of Lilienfeld Abbey built by the builder Domenico Sciassia . He equipped the castles Bergau and Kreisbach with chapels. In Lilienfeld-Stangenthal he had a magnificent baroque calvary built. When in 1683, in the course of the Turkish siege of Vienna , Turks and Tartars plundered in and around Lilienfeld, he successfully led the defense of Lilienfeld and the local population from Lilienfeld Abbey.
Abbot Matthäus was Vicar General of the Cistercian Order for Upper and Lower Austria from 1658 to 1673 . He was Vicar General of the Cistercian Order for Styria, Carinthia and Carniola from 1658 to 1667. As Vicar General of the Cistercian Order for Hungary from 1659 to 1673 and from 1680 to 1695 he endeavored to revive the old Hungarian Cistercian abbey of Zirc . He rebuilt the old Hungarian Cistercian Abbey of Klostermarienberg in 1680 and made it the responsibility of Lilienfeld Abbey. Abbot Matthäus was from 1652 to 1674 as General Reformation Commissioner an important representative in the later phase of the Austrian Counter Reformation. In 1654 and 1670 he was rector of the University of Vienna .
Abbot Matthew died at the age of 75. His body was buried in the Lilienfeld collegiate church.
